My kind of floor… In my kind of town. Chicago

This rug from the “Sonna” collection of area rugs tells the story of how the pineapple became the symbol for hospitality. The rug is crafted in 100 percent New Zealand wool; the story is told in a fully embroidered inset.
A fine companion is this porcelain medallion interpreted by Creative Edge Master Shop. Various sizes are available.
The architect wanted a stunning welcome for this home in a gated community in the northwest suburbs of Chicago and turned to the artisans at Creative Edge in Iowa. Using waterjet cutting technology, Creative Edge and artist Harri Alto translate fine art into thousands of pieces of stone (or any hard surface, for that matter) which are then assembled into designs like the ones you see here. Enter from a circular rotunda at the front of the house and you’ll be standing in a grand foyer, left, featuring the European medallion, made of marble, limestone and semiprecious stones from the Creative Edge catalog. Off the foyer is a dining room, above, featuring the same limestone and a standard Victorian border design in custom colors.
Architect Nicholas Karras chose to embellish the beige French limestone field tile in the rest of the foyer-living room space using 3-inch square “keys” of Spanish marble called Emperador Dark. The medallion was selected for its classic good looks and ability to complement the double sweeping staircase and its wrought iron.
Upstairs, the master bath features the Portofino, a standard medallion and a border, the Rossano, in custom colors of marble, limestone, onyx and semiprecious stones. ![]()
