When winter comes along, there is no better feeling than going home, closing the door behind you and kicking off your shoes.
Forget the spa, forget the shopping mall; neither can compete with the emotional pull and “feel good” factor of your own home. Home, after all, is the original comfort zone.

Comfort is at the heart of all homes, and nothing creates comfort better than wool. Soft and luxurious, wool has a therapeutic quality that cannot be replicated by any other fiber. There is nothing cold or hard about wool; it is wonderfully tactile and brings instant relaxation to the home in the same way that a hot bath and a milky drink does at the end of a hard day.

However, wool is not just luxurious and comfortable; it is also a stylish and practical floor covering, which is regarded by carpet manufacturers across the world for its inherent natural beauty and superb resilience.

It’s a Wool World… Did you know…
Mother Nature wins every time, and nothing proves this better than wool. Wool is nature’s own “smart” fiber, with a complex physical and chemical structure made up of more than 20 amino acids, which form chains of protein. The multiple functions wool performs are all completely natural and, as yet, no man-made fiber has been able to replicate them all.

When guests step aboard the world-famous cruise liner Queen Mary 2, they are not simply walking on water but walking on wool. The lavish interiors are beautifully carpeted by the manufacturer Brintons, which chose British Wool to meet the high demands of the job.

Las Vegas, the international epicenter of gambling and entertainment, is also home to miles and miles of Axminster carpet manufactured in British Wool to resist footfall and fire. Casino floors are almost always clad in wool and endure thousands of feet on a daily basis, so next time you drop a coin at the slots, take a closer look!

British Wool has a particularly impressive range of properties born from its origin on the sheep that graze freely on the beautiful landscapes of Britain. Carpets and rugs made with British Wool will enjoy a unique springiness underfoot, due to the inherent bulk of the fiber. This results in incredible resilience to footfall, ensuring that the carpet retains its appearance for many, many years.

Reasons to Choose British Wool…

Sheer Beauty – lots of stunning designs that look simply fabulous.
Home Comfort – warm and tactile underfoot.

Superb Resilience – resists tracking better than any other wool type, giving peace of mind.

Breathe-ability – wool breathes and naturally regulates and releases moisture in the air to provide an almost climatically controlled environment with a high indoor air quality.

Eco-friendly – grown on an annually renewable resource –– sheep!

So Safe – naturally flame-resistant and slip free.

Easy care – only needs regular vacuuming to keep it looking good, and resists spills and stains.

British grown wool – is graded according to strict guidelines set by the British Wool Marketing Board, a nonprofit making organization representing approximately 60,000 UK sheep farmers.

Thermal and acoustic insulation are both part of wool’s resume –– giving your home and many businesses warmth and the immeasurable benefit of peace and quiet...and peace of mind Wool is a time-tested product. Visit any stately home or royal residence in the United Kingdom and you will find British Wool in the most beautiful and intricately designed Axminster carpets.

In bygone days, the woven carpet was a prestigious investment, an indication of good taste and prosperity. Despite hundreds of years of wear, the carpet’s beauty remains intact. For many, this aged appearance enhances the appeal, showing that even in antiquity wool continues to outperform other fibers.

Today, a new quality carpet offers instant transformation to a room, and manufacturers now offer the most extensive range of designs, colors and coordinates. Classic plains, dramatic patterns and wholesome textured naturals make carpet the perfect choice; runners and borders bring finishing touches that make your home beautiful and unique.

How seriously is British Wool taken in the UK as a major natural resource? It’s long been a favorite topic of the Royal Family. Prince Charles was presented with a Shepherd’s Crook at this year’s Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate, England. This is the symbol of sheep farmers in the UK and is used as the Quality Mark for British Wool carpets made by manufacturers licensed by the British Wool Marketing Board.

British Wool inspires the designer in all of us with prestigious names like...
Woven Axminster, with offerings such as the beautiful Renaissance Classics range from Brintons in 80 percent British Wool/20 percent nylon, which will bring an air of understated charm to your home.

Ulster Carpets of Ireland, which offers “aesthetic versatility” and shows how pattern can be both a contemporary and a traditional backdrop with the simply stunning Anatolia Collection.

Axminster Carpets Ltd., which creates carpets that make a statement with a certain understated style. The new Brighton Pavilion range is influenced by Indian and Chinese motifs, which decorate the Royal Pavilion in Sussex England and give subtle but serious drama to the floor.

Goodacre Carpets of Kendal, set in the lush British Lake District, has developed several beautiful ranges with coordinating borders and runners. Color trends are evident in this lavish range, which is strongly influenced by the importance of fashion on home furnishings. Goodacre’s Modern Classics Collection in 100 percent British Wool includes sumptuous shades of raspberry, chocolate, plum and black.

Woven or Tufted? Understand the Difference

Wool in carpet is used in different manufacturing methods but fall into two different types, woven and tufted.
Woven carpets are made on a weaving loom; the backing threads and pile are woven at the same time and so create a strong interwoven carpet. Axminster and Wilton are well-known woven types.

Tufted carpets are produced by machines, which push hundreds of needles threaded with yarn through a backing, which form loops. These are then cut to produce cut-pile or left as loops to produce loop-pile carpets.

A further backing is applied with adhesive to give the carpet strength; many plain and textured carpets are tufted.
